Biggest thing psychological wise with Drill Instructors... After reading "The Few and The Proud" which was about Marine Drill Instructors... Every single thing they do is for a purpose. They do it because they want you to survive, because they want you to succeed. No Recruiter or Drill Instructor wants their boys to come home with a folded flag..... If you know this, I think it would make boot camp or NROTC much more enjoyable and a rewarding experience. If you realize everything they tell you and teach you is for a reason, well.... You can do it ;D

You can do it ;D I'm not a Marine, but, as a Soldier, who has been through Army Basic Training, I think the one thing New Recruits need to understand is that Drill Instructors/ Sergeants are there to do a job. They aren't there to get you to hate the military....or to traumatize you for life......but, they are there to take you out of your comfort zone....push you to the limits....break you down and build you back up in the most honorable way that the military can mold to it's global mission. When the shots start flying in Iraq, it's the drill sergeant those soldiers/ marines will remember. Drill Sergeants are the best of the best.....hand picked to carry forward an incredible mission and responsibility. They do what they do so that you will survive the most grueling combat scenario.

Melody, I know you are very right. I do want to do this so bad. It all I want. I guess it's just that fear kicking in and anxiety. I allow myself to be as strong as I can. I don't really know how to explain my emotions and confusions.

Erwin, I know that everything they do it for a purpose. The DI's beat you down and build you up as a Marine. I know that yes they do everything so that you will be prepared for combat. I'm just nervous about the mental part. How will I react to all the yelling at boot camp? I'm not sure.

I don't really know how to explain my emotions and confusions. ashley, fear and anxiety are all a part of life. we all have fears and we all get anxiety...however, we can't let them consume us. we must look beyond the fear, and work through our anxieties, and realize that after we've faced our fears, we've either come out on top, or maybe on the bottom, but all in all we've learned from the experience. if you can learn from life, you've been succuessful. who knows that 'fear' could be the best thing thats ever happened to you. (on a side note: i was just having this conversation with one of my good friends) ;D i know it's hard to explain. nothing in life is easy darlin. we need to just be honest with ourselves, and our peers, and we must learn to believe. believe in yourself ashley. you can do anything you want to, even if it is scary at times. you have to push yourself through it. if it ever gets tough and you need someone...well i'm just a pm away...and if you want...send me a pm and i'll give you my number and you can call me anytime you want.

It's just so hard to really I guess take advice. I know that people that have gone through this know what it's like, but it's just hard to believe that everything WILL be ok. I don't know how to say it. So many thoughts running through my mind.

I don't know how to say it. So many thoughts running through my mind. It's scary, Ashley, and no amount....or variation....of words will ever be able to hide the fear or anxiety. It's truly those leaps of faith that noone really understands until they go through it. That's the tough part......going through it..............but, no matter what you decide.......even if you DON'T join......don't think that your'e any less of a person. It's hard to explain, but, in the heat of the moment, there were times where I thought to myself "I HAVE to join..." because if I don't join.....I'm just weak....or not capable...... .......that's not true.....if you don't do it...that, doesn't necessarily mean you can't do it. I know this is getting deep...lol...but, don't let this one decision alter your self perception, no matter what you decide. And, for what it's worth, no matter what you decide, wev'e got your back........yes, a whole bunch of anonymous internet posters hiding behind bizarre screenames. I hope you find that comforting lol.... (Many of us have posted our pictures here though, in samSForce...) at least the staff here has ;D

Thank you so much Melody. I know you are right. It is hard at times to believe in yourself. But if I want this I will have to believe in myself even when nobody does. I like what you said "who knows that 'fear' could be the best thing that's ever happened to you." I think you're right. I have a fear of going into the Marines and boot camp, on what to expect but it CAN be the best thing. I can't let fear get the best of me. I have to work through it.

Thank you that does mean a lot. It did get deep but I think that is what I need. I have talked with a lot of Marines and they have all said they cannot explain what goes on at boot camp, you have to experience it yourself. I can't really see myself not joining. All I talk about is the Marines and cannot wait until graduation. I really do want this. If i don't make it I will feel bad and like a loser. But hey...that shouldn't be in my mind. About the "heat of the moment", I hope that's not what this is. Me wanting to join now just because of the heat if the moment in my life right now. I just wish God could tell me if this is what He wants me to do or not.
