I run outside, I hear it's better for your knees. That and I don't live anywhere near a gym unless you count the incredibly small one on my campus at school. But yes I run outside, we have some bike paths around our house so I just run around there.

Well, I'm not in AROTC, (actually AFROTC), and not actually any expert on running, but I can tell you what helps me. I'm new to the AF as well, and my first PFT scores weren't that great but here's what I did. On the running, as I learned REAL quickly, you have to run more than 2 miles.. For the AF's PFT we only have to run 1.5miles, so I'm trying to run upwards up 2.0 miles now. You just gotta kee pushing yourself man, that's all there is to it (along with proper technique.) Excellence in All We Do! Go Green (and Blue !)
Any other questions abt ROTC just ask, or if you have advice tell me. I'm always up for learning more.

what really helped me build up for my first APFT was running sprints. At the begginging of last summer I was in the same position as you. I was running a 17:30 2miles. What I would do was go down to the track and run. I'd sprint the straight aways, and jog on the curves. I also worked on my form, stretching my stride, and working on my arms swing[helped alot more then I thought] by the first week in the Battalion I passed the APFT and was able to contract within the first month. Since then I have been going to PT, and working out in my free time. PT is usually never enough to improve your scores dramatically. Basically, try running 1 1/2 - 2 miles with the sprinting, which ever seems easyer.

I know what you mean goarmy2011, I usually try and jog about 2 miles every other day. I've done about 1.6 miles in 15 mins, but I like your running routine too. I think I'm gonna try that this week. 2 miles sprinting the straight aways, granted I'll end up jogging after a shorter while than you because I've never been in shape my whole life, but I'm getting much better.

you might want to take in the advise earlier in the thread. I had some questions about running too, turns out that controling your breathing does help. I was able to run 3miles easyer today because I didn't get the stitch in my side.

Wow all- good for you. I CAN"T run..... occassionally I wonder whta its like...then i decide against it. I tookma a semester off from school and my PT (cept for me it's calle Physical Therapy) Yes I notice a difference; Yes I need to restart and stick with it...

It's tough to make it a habit. But last semester it was pretty much all I looked forward to was a good run. School bored me to death. I began to make a habit out of it, and I'm getting pretty darn good at it right now. I do intervals, I run 1/2 mile as fast as I can, and then walk a 1/4 mile, I do this about 2 to 3 times, then I run 1/4 mile as fast as I can, then walk 1/8 mile, and I usually do this about 6 to 8 times. I just make sure I get 3 miles every time I go.
Good luck with your physical therapy, my mother had to do that to rehabilitate her knee after surgery, and boy she had a hell of a time with that. It's tough, but keep at it. Nothing worth having is ever easy, for the most part. Some things can be solved by throwing money at it, but I don't have any money, so nothings ever easy.... And now I begin to ramble, so I'm going to end my ramble here.

Hehe I just fully read your reply David. Thanks for the encouragement. My issue is I decided to let everything go to heck for years and now am finding it harder and harder to function. And pushing myself is too darn depressing.

A proper workout routine is necessary to get the fitness and get your desired shape. Cardio exercises are equally important along with the weight workouts for getting a shaped and a fit boy. Do jogging, running, swimming, and push ups etc. along with weight workouts for the better fitness level.
