My name is Ashley and my younger sister's boyfriend is in the Army National Guard and just left today for his year long deployment. My poor sister is so broken up about it, but I have to say she's so much stronger than I could ever be. She's only 16, and her boyfriend just turned 19, but they have been together for nearly 3 years and every year he has been gone on their anniversary due to the Army. I know this is so hard for anyone, but I especially think the two of them are too young to have to be dealing with such a harsh world. I promised him that I would take care of her while he's gone, the only problem is I don't know really how I can help her other than to be here for her to cry on when she needs me. I wish there was more I could do! If any of you have any advice for me it would be greatly appreciated. I have such admiration for all of you family members left here while your soldiers are off to war. The soldiers aren't the only brave and courageous ones out there! You all are amazing too!

welcome ashley!! it's good to have you here! let me first start out by asking you to tell your sister's boyfriend we all here at samSForce say thank you!
it is my belief that love, true love, knows no distance, time or age. Things you can do to help her....be there for her when she needs you, as you said. You can also keep her busy and keep her mind off of things...you could help her make and send care packages too! you could also tell her about this site, and have her join us!!

hey sweetpea! hang in there darlin. send him letters and pictures, keep him updated on things that are going on at home...if he is deployed, send him care packages!..this will not only occupy your time, but it will really boost his morale. there is a whole list of care package ideas that i've created in "Mail Call!!"...themed care packages, and ideas from our military themselves!
we're always here for you! don't ever hesitate to ask for help if you need it. We're also very good listeners...so if you just need to vent, pm someone or post it in "military family life"....

Hi all, mark here. I find it does get a bit better after some time goes by waiting for a letter but I did get my first letter from my girlfriend. Letters really do help not just her but the both of us. I am not sure how many letters to send because I don't want her drill sargent to give her hell for getting too many letter. Any advice ? Puls I was checking out the fort jackson web site and it looked ...to me .. fun and wish I could try it out .. but I did promise Timmista ( my girlfriend) I wouldn't.

Mark, Im not sure about the other branches but we can only send letters in bootcamp on sunday. We didn't have a recieve limit but make sure you know that the mail will/could be opened and be pre screened. Plus if I remember correctly we weren't allowed pictures. Just letters.
