This has been a topic of great debate, and, many great insights emerge from this question. So, 'Sam' wants to know your thoughts. If you were 'Sam' would you want an All-volunteer Army, or the re-implementation of a draft?

Being in the military, I guess it gives me a particularly skewed view of this topic. I like the idea that I can go and sign up whenever I want and serve my country for X amount of years without worry of being called back even after my contract ends. I like the fact that it was a choice I made and not someone else making that choice for me. All-volunteer means that people are doing this out of personal choice, not forced fear.
But with a draft, you are guaranteed to have enough soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen to fill all the necessary holes that an all volunteer force might leave. But this means you are FORCING people to serve in a military they may not care for. This leads to disturbance and discomfort because you have the people that don't mind being there but you have folks that have NO interest in being there. Personally, I'd rather fight next to someone that chose to be there than someone that is forced to be there.
So in the end, I like to keep the military an all volunteer force!

Well, my thoughts are I'd like to keep it voluntary. I couldn't imagine what it would be like if a draft were to happen in the U.S with the war in Iraq and so many people against it. I can imagine more people fleeing to other countries to avoid it.

I can imagine more people fleeing to other countries to avoid it. From a soldier's perspective, as much as it would be nice if Americans would WILLINGLY sacrifice their time, energy, and maybe even their lives, to our country, that great task seems to be reserved by the small handful who are actually willing. It's unfortunate to see the decline in people who would step up and volunteer......what was once a country where people would run out with their pitchforks in order to protect their homeland.....well, it doesn't seem the case anymore. As a soldier, though, I would have a difficult time having someone sharing a foxhole with me who didn't truly want to be there. It becomes more of a liability than anything else....of my own life....and my squad member's lives.......the brotherhood founded in the military can only be accepted by those who truly understand it and embrace it........drafting people deteriorates that, and, ultimately, leads to a less efficient fighting machine because of the waste generated....and the liability incurred....by those who don't truly WANT to be there....

see, we agree on this issue Sam. We both know how it is. Like I said in my previous post, I'd rather be next to a guy that signed up to be there than someone that was told to be there or else go to jail.

Forcing someone to enlist is a recipe for disaster, not only will he resent his brothers and sisters, he will resent his country too.

Forcing someone to enlist is a recipe for disaster, not only will he resent his brothers and sisters, he will resent his country too. Well you're never for sure about that. Right now I'm leaning towards yes. On a political side of view, we should re-instate the draft because of the fact that we're wasting money on Blackwater Mercenaries. We have hired tons of them to do the jobs other people who call themselves Americans aren't willing to do. And you never know, some people who never considered a career in the military might change their minds after being in the service for a while. So there is an upside to some of that. Whereas you may be right as well, others would hate our government for forcing them to enlist. On a personal note, one of my cousins thinks less of me because I want to join the Army. I'm sorry, but why is it that you hate people for wanting to serve their country, and willingly put themselves through hell if need be to protect others who won't. Although looking through the city I live in, there are really only a select few people who I'd want to protect. The city of Stockton is comprised of mostly gangbangers and ricers, and don't forget the guys who have the "Nor-Cal" stickers on the back of their cars and think they're the toughest guys around. We have less and less people volunteering every year. We're offering quite a bit of incentives to people who enlist and commission. But yet people still think that the government will try and screw them over anyway it can. I think people should AT LEAST do their research before they say the military isn't for them.
