I am the one with hope in her eye Worry on her mind And a yellow ribbon around her heart.
I was there from the very beginning. I went with him throughout Europe. I made my way in Germany as well. I was there in Korea and Vietnam. And I’ve been with him in the desert too.
I was the Army nurse, Who cared for each soldier as if he were my own. I kept the home fires burning While he drudged through the trenches of Europe.
I left the family to work the factories While he was away in Germany. I made history with the war effort and missed him everyday.
I was a soldier’s sweetheart who cried the day he left To fight a war they called a conflict. I made sure to write him letters And to send packages from home.
I am the woman they refer to as a flower child. I wore his dog tags with pride. I remember the feeling of dread when he received his draft notice And feared his trip to the jungle.
I am the military wife who sleeps with the phone on my pillow And who prays my soldier will make it home for the birth of our child. I cry for 15 months straight for a soldier in the desert half way around the world. I am a new generation of women who have joined these ranks.
I am his strength. His motivation. His reason to fight.
I am the wife of a soldier. And he is the reason for everything I am.
