So, as some of you know, I am a proud memeber of the University of WI-Whitewater's Forensics team. (NO, we don't cut up dead bodies) It's interpretive speaking such as prose drama poetry or more formal speeches: info, persuasion, ... Anyhow... my team is my family. In fact the teams in our region are a "Forensics family" Well, NIU is in the family. Within hours, we created and recruited members to a FB group, which served as a HQ to share info. Even scarier, was that the team's van flipped over on their trip home from a tourney at Eau Claire on Sunday!! Two students were minoly injured. Thankfully a NIU forensicator posted that everyone has been contacted and accounted for after this afternoon.
While I am impressed w/ the unity we showed within hours of hearing the news, I didn't like being that scared. Too close to home. I'm frusterated by the cracks in the system; i understand them, because I am a psychology student. (minor) It worries me that after VA Tech, it happened again.... I used to think that in college I wouldn't need to worry about school violence. These cracks let these individuals slip through the system... and that is a threat to us and them. What will it take to get the government to start fixing these cracks in systems that cause avoidable tragedy???!!
