I am an Army mom and my son has been in the military since he was 17.He is going career and is 25 now, a Sgt. and is currently serving his 3rd tour in Iraq.
He spent his first 2 years in the military in an OPFOR unit over in Germany and was fortunate to be able to travel all over Europe(I told him to see the other countries every chance he got and not to just stay on post and he listened to his mama).
I talk to him just about every day on Yahoo and I am so happy that even though we are half a world away from each other we are very close and I get to say "Good morning" and "Good night" to him on most days.
I coordinate lots of single soldier 'adoptions' and the sending of Christmas stockings and toys for the soldiers and local kids every holiday he is deployed and alot of his single friends come to my home on leave with him because I am just "mom" to alot of them.
It is very hard sometimes and if I don't see him online for more than a few days at a time I get worried and he knows this and calls or writes as soon as he can.
We are very close and I am so proud of him that sometimes I can't hold it in and my eyes leak and I thank God for all of our young men and women in our armed forces that are so brave and honorable and courageous! They make our country what it is and they uphold a tradition of patriotism that made our country strong and great and I am honored to be a part of that...even as simply...mom.

".....currently serving his 3rd tour in Iraq......." I'm sure I am one of MANY Americans who can't thank your son enough for his service. Iv'e only done one tour....so far.....3 tours is a sacrifice that most, if not all, Americans can relate too. If he's on his third tour, that means he has probably been actively deployed since he was 21..... .....I'm 24 now....joined the Army when I was 18.....almost immediately following 9/11......it's been my only tour so far.....deployments certainly bring families closer. There's nothing like that big homecoming party.....I felt like a celebrity for the first few weeks after coming home. My folks had a big welcome home sign out front....I mean....that thing was almost billboard size....lol....and, everyone I knew from church and other arenas, all come and we had a big party.....it felt good....but, stepping back on American soil, after a long year overseas in a combat zone, is a feeling that most cannot relate too. It makes me love my country so much. ......I only wish that many others were willing to sacrifice as much as your son.....
