Who would like to be my date to Prom? I'll buy you a nice corsage and we'll take a limo, and I'll pay for dinner. Only thing you have to pay for is your dress, shoes, and any jewelry (unless you already have it bought). Any takers? Just kidding But seriously, I was just wondering what you all think about women in the armed forces. It has been a hot topic issue ever since women were allowed in and since we do have military personnel, it'd be nice to know what you think! Personally, I would likely endanger my own self to keep a woman protected in combat, which is probably why some people aren't too keen on women being in combat. But since I've never been, my opinion isn't too valid.. Troops & Veterans, what say you?? [Agent:2]

Personally, I would likely endanger my own self to keep a woman protected in combat, which is probably why some people aren't too keen on women being in combat. But since I've never been, my opinion isn't too valid.. Troops & Veterans, what say you?? The truth is, the parameters of a combat zone/battlefield aren't clearly defined like they were in previous wars. In fact, they are extremely blurred, and, with the nature of terrorism, and, with 9/11 as proof, we are just as susceptible to terrorism here, as we are to some suicide bomber over THERE. ....and, as such, women, even though I don't believe they can serve in direct combat roles, the truth is, no matter where they are, they will consistently be exposed to the stresses of the battlefield. Even if they live in an otherwise 'safe' base, almost every base in Iraq and Afghanistan are susceptible, at the very least, to some degree of rocket/mortar fire. Between being a nursing student, and a soldier, I must say though, my respect for women has increased 10 fold. I was watching a huge documentary about the Marines a few days ago.......it showed everything from training, to roles in combat, etc......and, one colonel (I believe that was his rank....)said that he believes women have a very valuable role, but, he was very upfront when saying that he didn't believe that women would be fully capable of handling the stresses of direct combat missions, while working as a single unit, like men have been called upon to do for years. I certainly think SOME are capable, but, the majority, from an anatomical, and physiological, perspective, I tend to agree with the colonel.......I think the stresses of carry very heavy loads, for extended periods of time, are just to great. But, on the same token, I have been around GREAT women soldiers who could go all out in physically demanding sports. IF women are every allowed in direct combat roles, I don't believe standards should be altered or adjusted....they should be as vigorous as those males would have to obtain. Of course, there is also the fear of the natural tendency of men..........perhaps wanting to come to the aid of a female in combat, as priority, over other pressing things that should take priority (such as mission accomplishment).........thus, putting themselves, or their entire squad at risk........ What does everyone else think? I'm not sexist by any means........I just don't know if women's bodies, in general, would be capable of handling the stresses of full-throttle combat missions.... Honestly, I don't really have any problem with women being soldiers...but in a sense I'm standing in the middle of the road with it because I know that I would be unable to handle being a soldier. I am too sensitive emotionally to cope with the kinds of things that soldiers do. BUT, I have no problem with women wanting to be soldiers because people are unique and I'm sure that there are some women out there who do want to be soldiers and make good ones. I just know that I couldn't handle it, so I try to just support the people who do become soldiers because I respect them.

I served in the Air Force for 18 years. My first 10 years were in a male dominated career field. I drove a fuel truck and passed gas for a living (LOL). It was very difficult, not because I couldn't handle the job, but because of the men who didn't want a woman serving with them. When I went through tech. school I was the only female. My first duty assignment was Kunsan Korea in 1986. At that time I was the only female in Fuels (POL) at that duty station. Being the only female made it very challenging. I had to do twice the work to prove I could do half the job.
I was able to raise two children while serving. The only thing I regret is that I missed out on a lot of my kids lives because of my service.
I am not a feminist, but I do believe when assigned a job you do what is assigned. I agree with women in the military as long as they join for the right reason. In my experience many women join to find husbands, there are women who play the pity role to get the guys to do their jobs for them or sleep around. These are all wrong reasons. And because of women like this it makes it difficult for the women who want to due their duties and be respected for the job they do.
Women can do the job! Its not easy, but if your heart is in it you can do it.

too many women that i have been around in the military just wanted to join because they know they are a rare kind and that they can get pretty much anything they want just by opening their legs......its pretty sad a woman would want to do that but thats just how it seems nowadays......join for the guaranteed sex
