The inspiration for this thread came from a Facebook group.....and, a question conveniently entitled exactly what I named this thread....lol.....this has always been a topic of major consideration in my min.......I remember returning from a year in Afghanistan....and, I came home and was 19 or 20.....and, wasn't able to drink.....i was never a very big drinker to begin with......but, I think it's just the idea that I had rockets and bullets shot at me, but, I wasn't able to indulge in a celebatory drink when I got home..... What does everyone here think?......... (I may post this question in a few different locations in samSForce....feel free to cut and paste your thoughts/replies over to other places.....if you'd like......)

No, no and no. It's bad enough when kids turn 21 and they think they are so cool because they can go out and buy 50 cans of beer. Nothing good can come from lowering the drinking age because teenagers don't respect alcohol and are way too immature.

I believe if your 18 and in the military, you should be allowed to drink. If you can be shot at, you can drink

Agreed, If you can die for your country you should be allowed to drink. Im not saying to lower the drinking age to 18, I am just saying if you are in the military you can drink. I know it is a double standard but who cares? That person chose to defend our nation and deserves a beer once in awhile.

So what if other 18 year olds, who haven't served, get angry? (I know my argument would never fly.....and, it'll probably never change....).....but, if you can die for your country, you SHOULD be able to drink. Period. I served in Afghanistan for a year right after 9/11....had bullets and rockets and mortars shot at me on a daily basis.....and, when I came home, I couldn't even have a drink. Something is just flat out wrong about that, IMHO.....

I'll have to agree. I don't see why they shouldn't lower the age for military. They're going to do it anyway, might as well make it legal.

My first fight after joining the military was in a bar in my own hometown. I could buy whiskey at the base PX, but, I couldn't buy a beer down the street. I felt like it was okay for me to stand my ground to defend that guys right to sell it in my hometown, but, he was too good to serve me. Result: 3 days and 300 dollars.
Confuscious say: If man stand to defend right to free enterprise, banning him from that enterprise be not wise. Dougie say: Give me jack or I'll jack you up
..end of story

I would have to say that soldiers should be allowed to drink. Same thing that Bryan said, if you're old enough to get shot at, you're old enough to drink.

Supposedly South Carolina is working on legislation to lower the drinking age for solders. Although if they do that they stand a good chance of raising taxes. Higher taxes, or lower drinking age for solders[not civilians]. I think we all know the outcome.

Well, I'm from WI, as you all know by now. Here is a WI specific law about drinking under age 21. "Persons under age 21 may be on licensed premises, and can be sold and allowed to drink alcohol beverages, if they are with their parents, guardians, or spouses, as long as those persons are of legal age; but this is at the discretion of the licensee." In other words, you soldiers want to drink, move to WI....and drink w/ your families after you get home! Simple solution for us folks Thanks for the memories, Brett![COLOR/] #4 Forever
